Errata and Additional Information
Aloha
everyone!
Exchange Server 2003 24seven is finally written! I'm going to begin to publish supplemental
information and corrections (hopefully there will not be too many of those!)

Thinking about buying? This book is an operations and
troubleshooting book. I could not fit anything in here on migration. I
really think that should be a separate book. Perhaps I can convince Sybex to
publish an Exchange 2003 Connectivity and Migration book? What Sybex
says about the book:
"Focused
exclusively on real world topics, this how-to book offers practical advice
from an expert with experience deploying Exchange Server 2003. If you
already know the basics, you'll appreciate the comprehensive troubleshooting
sidebars and expansive coverage of security, anti-spam protection, disaster
recovery, installation checklists, wireless, and Outlook Web Access. Readers
rave that author Jim McBee has a real knack for making highly technical
material easy to understand. Based on Microsoft's final product, this
accurate and reliable guide to the Standard and Enterprise Editions of
Exchange Server 2003 gives you the knowledge and skills you need to achieve
pain-free, day-to-day operations."
A quote from an Exchange expert:
"Jim's written a meticulous, thorough, and readable guide to deploying and
maintaining Exchange Server 2003. Whether you have one Exchange Server or
dozens, you'll find clear, easy-to-understand guidance on the best way to
configure your Exchange servers for best performance, security, and
reliability."
Chapter 1 - Introducing Exchange 2003 and Exchange Administration
|Barry Gerber to the rescue! Barry helped me revise the original material
from the Exchange Server 2000 24seven book and added his own flair to the
material for Chapters 1, 2, 3, and 12. Barry is the author of
Mastering Exchange Server 2003 (Sybex, 2003).
Chapter 2 - Windows Dependencies and Platform
Chapter 3 - Active Directory and Exchange 2003
Chapter 4 - Understanding Exchange 2003 and Data Storage
Chapter 5 - Best Practices and Disaster Prevention
Chapter 6 - Daily and Long-Term Operations
Chapter 7 - Tweaking Operations
Chapter 8 - Keeping an Eye on Exchange 2003 Usage
Chapter 9 - Improving Performance
Chapter 10 - Recovering from Disasters
Chapter 11 - Clustering and Other Stories of High Availability
Some people think I'm anti-clustering, but I'm not. I'm just
"pro-clustering" for the right reasons. The original version of this chapter
was co-developed with Chris Fox from HP/Compaq. Dell's Dustin Johnson and
David Reeb (Exchange Ranger!) helped revise this chapter and make it
relevant for Exchange 2003.
Chapter 12 - Public Folders
Chapter 13 - Server Troubleshooting
Chapter 14 - SMTP and Message Routing
Chapter 15 - Connectivity Within Your Organization
Chapter 16 - Internet Connectivity
Chapter 17 - Securing Exchange Server 2003
Chapter 18 - Securing Message Content
Chapter 19 - Exchange and Firewalls
Chapter 20 - Supporting MAPI Clients
Chapter 21 - Deploying Outlook Web Access
Chapter 22 - Going Wireless - Outlook Mobile Access
In the case of Chapter 22, another good friend came to the rescue. By
the end of the book, I had hoped to have a lot more hands-on experience
deploying mobile devices. Unfortunately, that did not happen in a timely
fashion. Peter O'Dowd,
MCT and MCSE from New Zealand jumped and and wrote this chapter. Thanks much
Peter!
Chapter 23 - Supporting POP3 and IMAP4 Clients
Sadly, I wrote this chapter and it went through the entire editing
process before we realize there was just not going to be enough space for it
in the book. Sybex's publishing folks had already converted it to FrameMaker,
too. So, at least I have a nice, unused PDF for POP3 and IMAP4. You can view
the entire chapter!
