Network Analysis, Monitoring, and System Performance Tuning

If you have ever experimented with network protocol analysis or performance tuning, you know how complex the topic can be.  Here is a list of books that I have assembled that will help you navigate this difficult subject!

I want to issue a disclaimer about books such as these.  If network monitoring or performance monitoring is not your job or if you don't not have specific authorization to do it, then DON'T!!!!!!  You run the risk of being fired, losing your security clearance, or going to jail!  A network or security manager may misconstrue your intent as hostile or malicious and you will get in a world of trouble.  As my friend Richard is fond of saying "It will suck to be you!"

This book is a follow-on book to the author's Windows NT version of the book. The author is able to accurately explain the necessity of looking at the various "subsystems" (CPU, memory, network, disk) and how to analyze these subsystems.  This book approaches performance monitoring in much the same way that I teach it in class.
Network Analysis and TroubleshootingOrderby J. Scott Haugdahl
Want to get started with network/protocol analysis?  This is a great starting point!  This is one of my favorite subjects to show in classes and at seminars.  I love to show a group of network admins how easy it is to catch a POP3 or Web password.  It is a real wake-up call for the need for network security. But it is also a great introduction to one of the most powerful troubleshooting tools that you will ever have at your disposal.

No network analysis will ever been effective without an understanding of the underlying layers, including Ethernet, IP, TCP, UDP, ARP, and ICMP.. This book has a near legendary status among network managers and analysts. I bought this book nearly 6 years ago and I still refer to it every few weeks.  The book is pricey, but it is wise investment.
