Magazines
The magazine web sites all allow you to subscribe on-line; usually from their main page
there is a Subsriptions link.
- Windows NT Systems Magazine is
specific to Windows NT, but pretty good.
- Network Magazine is a great
magazine that has lots of general networking information.
- BackOffice Magazine is directed
towards the entire BackOffice family.
- Internet Week is more
specifically directed towards Internet technologies, but I enjoy reading this magazine
nonetheless.
- Info World has both a great web
site as well as a great printed magazine. It is more networking / software industry
generic, but provides a great view of the industry as a whole. It is the first thing I
read in my stack of magazines.
- Information Week is more
targeted towards MIS and IT management than directly at techies, but it makes a great read
anyway. Good columns and a good feel for where the industry is headed. Probably the best
put together magazine in the industry.
Books, Posters, Learning Tools and Other Free Things
- Get a great Network Communication Protocols poster from Hewlett Packard's Test and
Measurement group. This 2' x 3' poster includes references for the OSI Model,
TCP/IP, IPX/SPX, Banyan, Apple, IBM and more. A must have for the wall of every geek
(oops, network professional)!
- `Network Associates is giving away network
protocols poster which is really useful. Visit their site and fill out a simple
form.
- Training Tools is giving away
a couple of free training courses for JavaScript, FrontPage 98 and HTML. You
download these in PDF format. Thus far, they look pretty good! Definitely
worth downloading and printing.
Software: Freeware, Shareware and Public Domain Software
- Tucows at Oceanic - Wow! More
Windows 95/98/NT, Macintosh, Be, Unix and Linux software than you can shake a stick at!
- Beverly Hills Software has tons of
great Windows 95/98 and Windows NT software, including some cool server products.
- WinFiles.com is a great site with
a lot of Windows software.
- No Nags Pay a fee and get all the
great 'no nag' (no reminders about registering) software you can possibly handle!
- Sunbelt Software - These
guys are actually Windows NT software resellers, but they allow you to download demos of
most of the software they sell. Sign up for the NTools E-News e-mail news letter while you
are there! Good tech support here, also.
